About Us & Methodology

Last Updated: January 2026 • EVCostWise Methodology & Transparency

Our Mission

EVCostWise.com is a completely independent, consumer-focused automotive utility platform built to provide clear, unbiased, and mathematically rigorous cost transparency for electric vehicle owners and prospective buyers across North America.

As EV adoption accelerates, drivers are often bombarded with conflicting claims regarding fuel savings, complex tiered utility tariffs, and confusing charging equipment specifications. We believe that understanding how much it truly costs to fuel your EV should be as simple, instant, and accurate as using a calculator.

Authoritative Data Sources

Every formula and default baseline on EVCostWise is grounded in official government and industry reference standards:

  • Vehicle Technical Specifications: Battery usable capacities (kWh), certified driving ranges (EPA miles), and vehicle efficiencies (mi/kWh) are sourced directly from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) & Department of Energy (DOE) via FuelEconomy.gov (2026 Model Year data).
  • Residential & Commercial Electricity Rates: Baseline and off-peak average electric tariffs across all 50 U.S. states and territories are compiled from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Electric Power Monthly reports.
  • Retail Gasoline Prices: Regional gasoline prices used for combustion engine comparisons reflect the latest AAA National Average Gas Prices and EIA weekly retail gasoline surveys.

First-Principles Mathematical Methodology

Grid Power Required (kWh): Battery Capacity × ((Target % - Start %) / 100) ÷ Charging Efficiency (90%)
Session Total Cost ($): Grid Power Required × Local Electricity Rate ($/kWh)
Cost per Driving Mile ($): Session Total Cost ÷ (EPA Range × ((Target % - Start %) / 100))

Unlike simplistic tools that assume 100% ideal energy transfer, our algorithm incorporates a standard 10% AC charging loss (90% real-world efficiency) to account for onboard inverter heat dissipation, battery thermal management overhead, and wiring resistance.

Privacy & Client-Side Execution

EVCostWise operates on a zero-tracking, zero-database philosophy. All slider calculations, currency conversions, and chart updates occur 100% locally within your web browser. None of your vehicle inputs, mileage figures, or electricity rates are recorded or stored on any remote server.

Editorial Independence & Contact

EVCostWise is published and maintained by an independent group of automotive engineers and clean-energy data analysts. We do not accept sponsored vehicle rankings, pay-to-play utility listings, or editorial interference from automakers.
